General Information On Tattoo Ink

By: Fred Quaye

tattoo inkThe production of tattoo ink involves the blending of the elements of pigment for color and carrier for blending and sterilization. The manufacturers of this product are not required to reveal the contents of their product, as it is not under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration. Individual manufacturers mix their own special blends using their own special ingredients and then go to great lengths to conceal their product because they feel this blend is as valuable as the tattoo art work the blend is used to create. In the paragraphs below, we are going to enlighten you a bit on this topic.

The pigment, which is used to give color to the solution, is not made with vegetable dye. The pigments are made with mostly carbon based, metal salts and some are made with plastics. The color of the tattoo ink depends on the pigment. For instance, iron oxide is used for reds and blacks. Cadmium seleno sulfide pigment is used for orange. Turmeric is used for yellow and ochre is used for brown. Potassium Ferro cyanide is used for green and carbonate is used for blue.

The other half of the solution is the carrier. The carrier keeps the pigment fluid and is well distributed. It also sterilizes the solution, preventing diseases by retarding the growth of pathogens from whatever substance is used as pigment. The most commonly used liquids are ethyl alcohol, purified water, witch hazel, Listerine, propylene glycol and glycerin. However, propylene glycol and glycerin are recommended as the carrier.

There are many health risks associated with tattoos and some that are inherent with the way they are made. Alcohol makes the skin more permeable, so when the skin is disinfected prior to application of the tattoo, it makes it easier for the chemical to be absorbed. Therefore the toxins travel more swiftly into the bloodstream.

Another precaution needs to be taken during the mixing procedure. Here, the mixer needs to be experienced enough to make sure the materials are properly sterilized, especially during the hot and cold sterilization process.

There are many people who make their own formula and there are plenty of ads online for kits that you can buy. Today, you will find people advertising kits that they have made on their own. Again, the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate this industry. Instead, they have left it up to individual states.

If you are making your own solution at home, then always work in a sterile location. Wear some sort of mask or bandana and safety goggles if you do not wear glasses. Your solution should not be stored in direct sunlight, instead store in a cool dry location or it may become distorted and change the composition of the solution.

Purchasing your own solution would be the safest way to go. There are various online sites that have these inks - going online to get it would be the best idea as you can get it in bulk for a cheap price.
